Tiago Monteiro and Yvan Muller are targeting second place in the FIA World Touring Car Championship standings – starting from WTCC Race of China later this month.

Monteiro, from Portugal, and Frenchman Muller are equal on 199 points following last week’s visit to Twin Ring Motegi in Japan.

While second place would equal Muller’s final finishing position in 2014 and 2015, it would represent previously unchartered territory for factory Honda driver Monteiro, whose best finish to date is fifth, a feat he achieved in 2010 and again four years later.

Works Citroën pilot Muller said: “Tiago is my target in the championship. I am pleased now we are equal on points and it will be a good fight between us for the rest of the season.”

Monteiro added: “The championship is not possible for us any more so we will fight for second and every point will count. Yvan said I’m his target and he’s my target.”

WTCC Race of China takes place at the Shanghai International Circuit from 23-25 September.
