Wilson looks to Spain for next WRC fix

Matthew Wilson doesn’t want his return to the FIA World Rally Championship on Wales Rally GB last week to be a one-off and revealed that he is already working towards contesting the season finale in Spain in mid-November.

Wilson placed eighth overall on the Cardiff-based event on the back of a faultless display in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

“It depends on money, that’s the long and short of it really,” said Wilson. “We’ve got a few bits and pieces to work on and there are some options flying around. If we can do a couple of rallies in the second half of the year and back up to speed then we’d start next year in good shape when we hopefully get something sorted [for a full programme].”

Despite being unable to emulate the fifth-place finish he achieved in Wales last year, Wilson was satisfied with his efforts on his first competitive start for nine months.

“The result might not have been as good as last year but the performance was even better than last year and that’s the encouraging thing,” said the Briton, who attracted support from several companies based in his native Cumbria. “It was nice to be back, I was really enjoying it.”
