Thompson gets another WTCC return in Morocco
"James is a very good driver and a legend with four WTCC wins"
ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport will once again turn to James Thompson to pilot its Chevrolet Cruze when the FIA World Touring Car Championship heads to Morocco next week (6-8 May).
British driver Thompson deputised for team founder René Münnich at WTCC Race of Slovakia earlier this month due to Münnich’s commitments in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. With World RX clashing with the WTCC during the Marrakech weekend, Münnich has called on Thompson, who is 42 today, impressed with on his debut for the team at the Slovakia Ring, despite a lengthy absence from competition.
“James is a very good driver and a legend with four WTCC wins,” said ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Team Manager Dominik Greiner. “He did well in Slovakia for what was his first race in 12 months, his first race with our team and his first time in the Chevrolet. He was P5 in Free Practice 2 and was really unlucky not to progress further in qualifying. With René facing another calendar clash it made perfect sense to give James another chance. Although the objective will be to bring the car back in one piece on what is partly a street circuit after all, he will be able to directly on full power because he knows the potential of the car now.”
WTCC AFRIQUIA Race of Morocco takes place on the newly-completed Circuit Moulay El Hassan in Marrakech. Thompson was P11 and P7 on the old layout in 2015 driving for the factory LADA squad.
