János Puskádi is confident that his decision to retire early from last month’s Barum Czech Rally Zlín will help him when he contests the IRC 2WD Cup section of the Canon Mecsek Rallye, his home round of the series, this week.

Puskádi, the only IRC 2WD Cup regular to score drivers’ championship points outright this season, was tackling the Czech round for a fourth time but hit trouble early on in the Honda Civic Type R he shares with co-driver Barna Gónor.

“We were experiencing problems right from the start,” said Puskádi. “I drove a little too intense in the second stage, hit a rock and had two punctures. In the third special stage the driveshaft broke, forcing us to proceed in one-wheel-drive, which wore out the clutch. After the repair, I then missed my braking point and hit a tree, damaging the windscreen. At that moment, I realised it just wasn’t our day and decided to retire. I’m now going to concentrate on my home rally, where I am sure I can secure a good result.”
