Coronel : "We made the impossible

Tom Coronel “made possible the impossible” by winning two rounds of this season’s FIA World Touring Car Championship as a privateer.

DHL-backed racer Coronel claimed standout Opening Race wins in Marrakech and Vila Real by not cracking under pressure on each occasion in his ROAL Motorsport-run Chevrolet.

While he will head to the season finale in Qatar next month unable to better third place in the WTCC Trophy standings, Coronel says he can be “happy” with how the current campaign has panned out.

“It’s the best results we’ve ever had with the Chevrolet, two wins and a second, which are are really a lot better than the expectations at the beginning of the season,” said the Dutchman. “I knew there were opportunities in Marrakech and Vila Real and we took them. Theoretically it’s impossible to win with my [older specification] car but the impossible we made possible and this is clever from ROAL Motorsport and myself.”

Coronel continued: “As long as you buy a lottery ticket there is an opportunity to win the lottery. If you don’t buy a lottery ticket you will never win the lottery. Of course our possibilities are less than the others but at least we did it and we got a lot of attention. This gives my sponsors a good feeling and the feeling I have with ROAL Motorsport is only getting stronger.”
