Björk: Give Polestar a year and we’ll be WTCC champions
"Drivers are always optimistic about what they can do"
Thed Björk is predicting very big things for Polestar Cyan Racing and its Volvo S60 TC1s in the FIA World Touring Car Championship – but not until 2017.
Björk and team-mate Fredrik Ekblom will fly the Volvo flag in this season’s WTCC in what is primarily a development year for the Swedish make.
However, reigning Swedish touring car champion Björk has high hopes for season two.
“Drivers are always optimistic about what they can do,” said the 35-year-old Swede. “But we also have to be realistic for the first year. The realistic thing in the first year will be to fight and try to get some podiums and maybe a race victory – that would be awesome. From the second year on we want to win the championship, no question about it.”
Björk and Ekblom are due to take to the track in their Volvo S60 Polestar TC1s later this month for their first running of 2016. Before then there will be plenty more hard work behind the scenes, according to Björk.
“The mechanics are working flat out, the team is working really a lot,” he said. “There’s been no driving yet [this year], only preparation. It’s big preparation from the team and both me and Fredrik. We’re training hard and getting ready.”
