Basso leads after the opening day (...)

Giandomenico Basso has snatched the lead of Rallye Sanremo after going a sensational 15.5s faster than any of his rivals through the 44-kilometre Ronde stage.

Driving an Abarth Grande Punto with slick tyres for the drying conditions, Basso climbed from fourth to first following his first stage win of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge qualifier. He starts day two 5.2s ahead of Paolo Andreucci, who opted for intermediate rubber for the gruelling stage.

Luca Rossetti was second fastest on the stage and moves into third overall. Kris Meeke spun his Peugeot 207 and dropped 25s but remains ahead of Juho Hanninen, the driver most likely to follow in his footsteps by becoming IRC champion.
