Romain Grosjean hoping history (…)

Romain Grosjean is hoping that history will repeat itself in tomorrows Canadian Grand Prix, where the Frenchman will start from 7th position on the grid. The last time Grosjean started 7th, he went on and ended up on the podium during the race. This occurred at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Lotus’ most competitive race of the season.

The Lotus of Romain Grosjean has struggled to find luck throughout 2012 so far, retiring from three of the six races. All three of those retirements have occurred in the opening three laps of each race, whereas his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen has successfully finished every race of the season so far. In all but one of those races, the Finn has consistently finished in the points, with some predicting the F1 returnee for victory this weekend in Canada.

Unfortunately, those predictions might have to wait until the next race in Valencia after Kimi Raikkonen suffered a hydraulic issue during qualifying which means he’ll start tomorrows race from 12th on the grid. A successful race isn’t out of the question, with passing relatively easy at Montreal, however it’s Grosjean who is in dire need of a competitive race result this weekend.

“For sure we wanted a bit more from qualifying but this is a tricky circuit to get right, and the big variation between conditions yesterday and today didn’t help.” Explained Romain Grosjean, “The car felt pretty strong but my last run could have been better, which is a shame. Our car has been quite easy on tyres so far this season and hopefully that could make the difference. Last time I started in P7 we ended up on the podium, so let’s hope it can happen again tomorrow!”

This is the Frenchman’s first time racing around Montreal’s Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, and with no GP2 knowledge of the track it will be tough 70 lap race tomorrow. However, there is no doubt that both Grosjean and Lotus have decent pace, and a podium is most certainly not out of the question for the 26-year-old.
