Kimi Raikkonen: There is nothing (…)

Former Formula 1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen has stated how he has nothing wrong with the way the tyres work in 2012, contrary to many drivers (most notably Michael Schumacher) who believe the tyres are detracting from the racing. The Finn is now into his seventh race of his comeback year, and has already stepped onto the podium twice.

With the 2012 season being dominated by the new Pirelli tyres, there has been mixed feelings on whether they are good or bad for the sport. Some have stated that the tyres have now turned F1 into a lottery, instead of a traditional race where the fastest driver always wins. However, the ‘Iceman’ of Formula 1 has stated there is nothing wrong with the rubber Pirelli have on offer this season.

“No, that’s bull.” Said Kimi Raikkonen, when asked whether F1 was now like a casino instead of a race. “There is nothing wrong with the tyres. You just have to get them working and try to make them last the whole race. That is sometimes a bit tricky, but not rocket science.”

When asked what would determine race wins in 2012, and ultimately the Championship, Raikkonen was blunt in his response: “A good car and a bad car. Okay, that is a bit too simple: you have to have a good package. But if you have a good car as a basis it gives you a much bigger chance, as the likelihood that the tyres will fall your way is much bigger. It is never just the tyres - that is a fairytale. It is not like if the tyres work at Marussia then they will start winning races - that will not happen, no matter how you look at it.”

Although Kimi Raikkonen has not always qualified well so far this season, the Finn has been more competitive when it comes to races results than his team-mate. On a circuit which Raikkonen has won on once before in his career, he’ll undoubtedly being hoping for another positive race result in this afternoon’s Canadian Grand Prix.
