Skoda to unleash Fabia R2 on IRC 2WD Cup

Skoda, which clinched the Intercontinental Rally Challenge drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles in 2010, could be about to make a similar impact on the IRC 2WD Cup following the unveiling of an all-new car.

The Czech firm has launched an R2-specification version of its Fabia Super 2000. The front-wheel-drive machine, which was developed in conjunction with engineering company Impromat Car, has a 1.6-litre engine and sequential gearbox.

“It’s great that from now on we’re offering a rally vehicle for a wider range of customers looking for a reliable and affordable race car,” said Jan Hurt, the Skoda manager for sales and marketing for the Central and Eastern European regions. “Given our successful tradition and development in motorsports beyond the Czech Republic, the new Fabia R2 is just a logical result of our activities. I’m sure that the model will be as successful as the Fabia Super 2000 already is today.”
