Q&A with Giandomenico Basso

When was your first rally, what did you drive and how did you do?

“It was the Rally di Montebelluno, a local asphalt event close to me in 1994. I had an Opel Corsa and I was leading, but then unfortunately I crashed!”

What’s the best thing about being a rally driver?

“Every time I get in the car it just gives me such exciting emotions: there is no such thing as a boring day at work. I love the thrill of the speed and the opportunity to work with some exceptional people. It’s a sport where you have to manage a lot of things in your head and with other people, so it teaches you a lot about life as well as about sport. I feel very lucky every day to have the opportunity to do this.”

If you weren’t a rally driver what sport would you most like to do and why?

“I’m not really sure as this is always what I’ve wanted to do, but it would be something in sport, I’m sure, as that’s what my personality leads me towards. It would probably be something in motorsport; maybe even in motorbikes as I’ve always loved motorbikes. I don’t ride one on the road any more though, as unfortunately I think the roads are becoming too dangerous…”
