Meeke leads Rally Islas Canarias

Kris Meeke has won the opening stage of Rally Islas Canarias, the 8.61-kilometre Moya stage.

Driving a Peugeot 207 Super 2000, Meeke set a fastest time of 5m04.4s to edge out Jan Kopecký in a Škoda Fabia.

Meeke admitted to making a few mistakes on the stage and also said he was trying to conserve his tyres.

Intercontinental Rally Challenge leader Juho Hänninen was fifth fastest in a Fabia after complaining of a few slippery sections and reporting that he was unsure of the level of grip available.

Brazil’s Daniel Oliveira lost more than 30 seconds early on the stage when he made a mistake.
