Fears that Kris Meeke would struggle to finish Rali Vinho Madeira due to an electrical wiring problem have proved unfounded after the Peugeot UK driver went fastest on stage 16, the 11.52-kilometre Rosário stage, to move back into second place ahead of Škoda Motorsport’s Jan Kopecký.
Meeke and co-driver Paul Nagle had to carry out emergency repairs after completing the previous stage with no charge to their 207 S2000’s battery due to a reported alternator belt failure. The repairs proved a success and Meeke was able to go four-tenths faster than rally leader Freddy Loix.
Loix’s overall advantage on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge event now stands at 25.8s.
