Loeb won’t hold back on Rally GB

Citroen legend Sebastien Loeb insists he won’t settle for second place on the World Rally Championship decider in Wales next week.

Loeb will almost certainly make it eight world titles in succession if he claims the runner-up spot on the four-day event, which covers the length of the principality from 10-13 November.

The French ace moved eight points clear of title rival Mikko Hirvonen with a 67th-career victory on RallyRACC-Rally de Espana last month. Drivers earn 25 points for a win in the WRC and 18 for coming second.

“If Mikko wins Rally GB, I have to be second with some good points from the Power Stage, but, for sure, I will try to fight with him and not to be behind,” said Loeb. “We will have to fight hard in GB, we know it can be difficult.”

Even if Loeb finished second in Wales, Ford driver Hirvonen could still be crowned champion providing he wins the rally and finishes no lower than second on the event-closing Power Stage with Loeb outside of the top three.

“I have no choice now, I have to go out and win the rally and win the Power Stage - to be champion, that’s what I have to do,” said the Finn. “Spain was a tough event but the Tarmac is behind me, it’s about the gravel now and I’m happy for that. I love Rally GB, it’s a great event and I’m going there with one result in my mind.”
