IRC 2WD Cup success delights Hunt

Harry Hunt has revealed his delight after winning the IRC 2WD Cup on Rally d´Italia-Sardegna yesterday.

The 21-year-old British driver claimed the laurels at the wheel of a Ford Fiesta R2 following two days of tough competition on the Mediterranean island.

Hunt, who was competing in Sardinia for the first time, took the lead when the Estonian, Kaspar Koitla, rolled his Honda Civic into retirement on Sunday’s first stage. However, Hunt could have been closer to Koitla but for a sizeable delay on Saturday.

“We clipped a rock with the front right so stopped to check,” said Hunt. “We took the wheel off to have a look but everything was fine although it cost us about five minutes. The heat was also a problem but we’re really pleased to have won because we never really expected this. The team is also chuffed.”

Hunt also reported losing time in dust clouds created by slower cars running ahead of him and co-driver Sebastian Marshall on the road.

London-based Hunt is now equal first in the title standings with Yeray Lemes, Kris Princen, Marcos Tokarski and Rafael Tulio, who have all claimed one victory apiece so far this season. His next event is the Geko Ypres Rally from June 24-26.
