Grosjean and Cecotto penalised after the race
GP2 Asia Series Champion and Super Nova driver handed drive through penalty
The Dams’ driver’s joy was a bit spoiled today after it was decided by the stewards that Romain Grosjean had failed to respect the track limits and gained an advantage. As Lotus ART’s Esteban Gutierrez tried to overtake the Frenchman at Tamburello in the final laps of today’s Sprint race in Imola, the Dams’ driver cut through the grass and kept his position.
He was thus handed a drive through penalty and an additional twenty seconds were added to his final result. As a consequence, Grosjean finished seventh of the race and without a point.
Also at fault according to the stewards was Johnny Cecotto at Super Nova Racing. It was found that the Venezuelan caused a collision with iSport’s Sam Bird which resulted in the Brit’s early retirement. Cecotto was also handed a drive through penalty and twenty seconds were added to his final result, but remains in 19th place.
