Chevrolet men get ready for title fight
Suzuka is new for almost everybody
Yvan Muller, Rob Huff and Alain Menu have arrived in Suzuka where the final sprint towards the FIA World Touring Car Championship title will kick off on Sunday.
The three Chevrolet are the only drivers still in contention for the 2011 crown: Muller leads the standings by 16 points ahead of Huff, while Menu lies third a further 64 points adrift, with 150 still at stake. None of them has previously raced at Suzuka.
“It’s always exciting to go to a new circuit. Suzuka is new for almost everybody and nobody has data, so I think we will all be on an equal footing. The championship battle? I am not thinking much about that,” said Muller.
Huff echoed: “The aim is to put my title bid back on track, but it’s still a long way to Macau… Suzuka will be difficult, especially because we are racing on the short circuit, which seems quite hard, but there is no reason not to be competitive there as well.”
And Menu concluded: “It’s a long time I have been wanting to race at Suzuka and despite my long career, I never had the opportunity. Of course, we are racing on the 2.2 km circuit, but it still retains all the initial section and corners of the GP track. I’ll try my best to stay in the race for the title, it’s not going to be easy, but I won’t give up as long as the mathematics give me a chance.”
