Pierre Campana is hoping the engine problem that has held him back on Rallye Sanremo can be solved to enable him to go on full attack on the 44-kilometre Ronde stage tonight.

Campana, who is tackling his third event in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge this season, lost ground when an engine sensor problem developed on his Munaretto Peugeot 207 Super 2000 on stage three.

By changing the sensor at the first service halt, it is possible that the engine mapping was altered to the extent it has been using 25 per cent more fuel than normal and not providing full power.

“It’s frustrating because we felt we were in a good rhythm and taking it easy in the first loop ready to attack in the second,” said the Corsican rising star. “When I felt the engine problem I began to lose time so it is disappointing.”

Campana has also been hampered by a broken gear level, which snapped off midway through stave five.
