Block to play it safe on WRC return

Ken Block has told WRC.com that he will have to resist the temptation of pushing flat out on some of his favourite stages in the FIA World Rally Championship when he tackles Brother Rally New Zealand next week.

The Gymkhana internet sensation is back in the WRC for the first time since Rally Guanajuato Mexico in early March. He concedes his lack of seat time will require a cautious approach to the gravel event, particularly on the showcase Whaanga Coast stage on day one.

“New Zealand has some of the best roads in the world and I’m really stoked to be driving on them again but I realise I’m going to need to show a bit of caution to get through them,” said the American ace. “I’ve not driven my Monster World Rally Team Ford Fiesta for a while now and I’ll get zero practice before [free practice and the Qualifying Stage]. That means I’m going to be sweeping the road for sure. I’ll do all I can to be in the top 10 at the end but it’s going to be tricky.”

Block has competed on New Zealand’s world championship counter two times in the past. He has also tackled a handful of national events in the country, claiming a podium finish on one occasion.

“I’ve spent a fair amount of time in New Zealand and the fans there are such enthusiasts and show a lot of appreciation for what we do,” said Block. “You get a really warm reception every time you go there and the people are very courteous.”
