Vergne: I think it was just a racing

Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne has stated how he believes his incident with the Caterham of Heikki Kovalainen was “just a racing incident”, after the two drivers made contact on lap 28. The incident subsequently forced Jean-Eric Vergne into retirement, after the damage sustained to his floor and rear wheel after receiving a puncture.

The incident in question caused sufficient amounts of debris on the track, and forced the safety car to take to the track whilst the marshals cleared the debris away. This had serious repercussions on the race at front, as Lewis Hamilton suffered a catastrophically slow pit-stop in the process. However, rookie Jean-Eric Vergne is adamant that no-one was to blame for the altercation.

“It’s a big shame not to finish the race.” Explained the Frenchman, “As for the incident with Heikki [Kovalainen], I felt I was ahead and as I started to turn into the corner, we collided and his front wing clipped my rear wheel and there was too much damage to the floor and it was impossible to change the damaged rear wheel so there was no way for me to continue. I think it was just a racing incident.”

Toro Rosso failed to score any World Championship points in the race, as the sole remaining car of Daniel Ricciardo also made contact with a Caterham, which ruined his chances of a point. The Italian-based outfit will be hoping for better luck next time out at Silverstone, in two weeks time.
