Q&A with Esteban Guerrieri

Esteban Guerrieri is gearing up for his FIA World Touring Car Championship debut at home in Argentina from 5-7 August. This is what the 31-year-old has had to say ahead of what could be one of the biggest weekends of his impressive career.

Why are you taking part in WTCC Race of Argentina?

“Because it is a great opportunity that arose for me. To be part of a FIA world championship is not something that happens every day. I am very enthusiastic to have the chance to compete against the best drivers.”

What’s your target for the two races at Termas de Río Hondo this weekend?

“Learn as much as possible to make a good and consistent progression during the free practices up to qualifying. Top 10 in qualifying is where I set my goal, which gives the chance to start in front with the reverse grid Opening Race.”

How concerned are you that you’re putting your reputation on the line by doing the race without any testing?

“It is not a concern to be honest. These are the cards I have to play with and I am fine with it. Many times in my career in Europe I had to jump into cars I never tested before and went straight to race weekends and performed very well. I think these situations empower me even more.”

What knowledge do you have of your Campos Racing Chevrole RML Cruze TC1?

“Not much yet. The only thing I have seen so far is through TV and on-board cameras. But if there is something I really like is to work into details. I’ve been getting ready with my Campos team, absorbing as much information as possible before jumping in the car.”

Who are you getting advice from about the car and the WTCC?

“I am a good friend with Néstor Girolami. He raced in two WTCC races last year. He already gave me some advice. But I believe with the team, listening to the engineers and looking at data should be fine. I also watch the races through Fox Sports here in Argentina and I have been doing my own analysis of drivers and their performances.”

What’s your knowledge of Termas de Río Hondo?

“I love the track. I am proud of having such a circuit in Argentina. I know it very well, indeed we raced there with Súper TC2000 a month ago, so I have a fresh memory which should be good and hopefully this one plays in my favour.”

How much of an inspiration is José María López to you?

“Pechito has done an incredible job since he landed in WTCC. He showed his great talent and set the benchmark for everybody else. It is a positive to have a fellow countryman performing like this, it can open doors for more Latin American drivers to come.”
