IRC 2WD Cup ace Hunt wary ahead of Ypres

Defending IRC 2WD Cup champion Harry Hunt will tackle the GEKO Ypres Rally for a second time this week, anxious to avoid a repeat of the crash that put him out of action when he made his debut on the Belgian event in 2010.

The 22-year-old from London crashed into a telegraph pole during the rally 12 months ago and retired. He fought back from the disappointment to win the IRC 2WD Cup title on the final round in Cyprus.

“Last year I wasn’t prepared for the number of obstacles that make this rally such a challenge,” said the Briton. “The roads are so open that you get lulled into a false sense of security; you think you can see everything, but it’s so fast-paced that potholes, ditches and rocks come from nowhere… even the odd telegraph pole.”

Hunt prepared for the event with a test in Verona, Italy, last week. He explained: “We tried out a few set-ups with the suspension and anti-roll bar, I think the car is pretty much spot on.”

More than 50 drivers will be battle for IRC 2WD Cup points in Ypres with Kevin Abbring, last season’s class winner in Belgium, set to pose the biggest threat.

Other notable names include Ghislain De Mevius, the son of Belgian rallying legend Gregoire, in a Kronos Racing-run Peugeot 207 RC, and promising young Belgian Matthias Boon, who will drive a Skoda Fabia R2. Estonian Martin Kangur will start his third IRC event of 2011 in his Honda Civic Type R.
