Wilson praises Loeb following seventh

Malcolm Wilson has paid tribute to Sebastien Loeb after the French ace captured his seventh world title with a memorable victory on Rallye de France earlier today.

However, the Ford team boss is convinced that his factory drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala will be able to mount a stronger challenge when the WRC kicks off with the new technical regulations in Sweden next February.

“It’s just very, very special what he has done,” said Wilson. “But for me the most impressive thing is his record on Tarmac. The championships are one thing but, bar one rally, he’s not been beaten on Tarmac since 2004 and this is incredible. On gravel we know he can be beaten but on Tarmac nobody has been able to threaten him again, let alone get near him for such a long time. He’s just so superior on asphalt.”

Wilson conceded that an eighth world title for Loeb in 2011 is a distinct possibility but added that the 36-year-old won’t have it all his own way next season.

“The positive thing for him is he’s got the experience and he knows how to win titles,” said Wilson. “There are not many people who would have been happy with that result in Japan but he knew what he was doing [by finishing fifth] because he knows how to win championships so I wouldn’t rule it out happening again in 2011. But we’re going to give him one hard fight and I’m absolutely sure that’s both of our drivers.

“We’re putting a lot of emphasis on the new Fiesta and I’ve seen a lot of good things, certainly from Jari this year [that makes me very confident]. We’ll get Mikko back [on form] and we’ll definitely present a strong challenge [to Sebastien]."

Ford of Europe motorsport chief Gerard Quinn added: "I congratulate Citroen, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena on winning the manufacturers’ and drivers’ world titles today. We look forward to renewing our battle with them next season with our all-new Ford Fiesta RS WRC. However, there are still two rallies remaining this season and we’ll do our utmost to end the season on a high note."
