Duarte Ramos has become the seventh different winner in this season’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge 2WD Cup following a comfortable display on Rali Vinho Madeira, which ended in Funchal Saturday.

Driving a Peugeot 206 Super 1600, the Portuguese driver moved in front when Luis Serrado, the long-time leader at the wheel of a similar car, went out on Friday’s final stage.

Not only did Ramos cover the event’s 298.20 competitive kilometres, he also doubled as a mechanic due to a shortage of helpers in his privately-run team.

Filipe Carvalho, at the wheel of a Peugeot 106, finished second.

With eight rounds run Brazil’s Rafael Tulio continues to top the drivers’ standings, despite not making the trip to the Atlantic island. Peugeot has moved ahead of M-Sport in the battle for the IRC 2WD Cup manufacturers’ title thanks to the combined efforts of Ramos and Carvalho.

The two-wheel drive series, which runs on the back of the main IRC, resumes with Barum Czech Rally Zlín from 27-29 August, where competition is expected to more intense due to the addition of several competitors from the Clio R3 European Trophy. They include Corsican Pierre Campana, who is second in the drivers’ table behind Tulio.
