Matthew Wilson says the pace of Ford’s Fiesta RS WRC has helped to make up for his enforced absence from the FIA World Rally Championship powered by Nokia due to injury.

Wilson contested Rallye Monte-Carlo in a Go Fast Energy-backed Fiesta, finishing 11th overall, but he’s not competed since after he broke his left ankle during a training fall prior to Rally Sweden in February. He’s unlikely to return to competition until the Acropolis Rally in Greece at the end of May.

Fiestas have won two of the three world championship rallies Wilson has missed and have also set a number of fastest stage times, which the Briton says is helping his recovery from injury.

“Mexico was a massive step forward and I don’t think we’ve had as much pace there as we had this year, that can only be a good sign,” said Wilson, whose family’s M-Sport organisation designed and built the Fiesta RS WRC. “I’ve been in the factory and seen the work that is going on. Everybody is working flat out and you can see the benefits in terms of speed as well as results.”
