Campana confirmed to compete in Tour de Corse
“A truly incredible thing”
Corsican rally driver Pierre Campana is set to resume action in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) at the legendary Tour de Corse, his home rally event, in May, having been confirmed on the participants list earlier today with a Peugeot 207 S2000.
Campana is currently leading the IRC 2WD Cup following a magnificent performance in the Monte-Carlo rally back in January. Tour de Corse will make up the third round of the IRC Series this season with Pierre’s aim to recapture glory on home turf.
Pierre last tackled the Tour de Corse event back in 2008 when he finished third in the JWRC standings but will have his sights set firmly on even greater things this year at the helm of an S2000 Peugeot 207 run by the Italian Munaretto squad and with Michelin tyres. The team has enjoyed recent competitive outings by finishing top of the S2000 cars at the recent Ronde del Grifo in Italy.
The so-called “Rally of 10,000 Corners”, Tour de Corse sees participants tackle a diverse range of twists and turns on mountainous roads and will cover a new route for 2011. The route will encapsulate the entire Mediterranean island and incorporate some legendary stages taking the event back to its roots. For Pierre, who hails from the Corsican town of Corte which will host the action on Friday 13 May, it will be tremendous opportunity to showcase his driving talent on home soil and in front of home supporters – all broadcast live on Eurosport.
Pierre Campana: “To have the opportunity to participate once again in the Tour de Corse is a truly incredible thing and I am already looking forward to competing on home ground and with the passionate support from Corsican fans. I started this season so competitively in Monte-Carlo and I am heading home as leader of the IRC 2WD, which makes things even more special. I haven’t competed in Tour de Corse for three years but the new-look format is sure to be special and be like the old times. I will again have the usual support of the Munaretto squad who have done a great job with the car, as well as benefitting from the fantastic performance of the Michelin tyres. I also appreciate the interest that Peugeot Sport has shown in my participation in this event and I hope to get some guidance and advice from them. Tour de Corse is the personal highlight of the season for me, so it will give me added determination and hunger for a good result. I’m aware that this is a good opportunity for me but it is a long event, especially the gruelling final day, so I will take it step by step and just see what happens.”
