Q&A with Romain Grosjean - A (...)

The Belgian Grand Prix lasted just a matter of metres for Romain, who will not compete at next weekend’s race in Monza after being handed a one race ban. Disappointed though he may be, the Frenchman accepts his fate and is determined to come back stronger than ever

Romain, unfortunately your Belgian Grand Prix came to a very early and abrupt end; tell us what happened.

I got a good start – despite being disturbed by Pastor [Maldonado]’s early launch, which I think was the case for everybody at the front – and was heading into the first corner when the rear of my car made contact with the front of Lewis [Hamilton]’s. I honestly thought I was ahead of him and there was enough room for both cars; I didn’t deliberately try to squeeze him or anything like that. I misjudged the gap; it was my mistake and unfortunately the consequences were not good. It’s been a difficult weekend from start to finish.

It must be disappointing to miss out on the Italian Grand Prix?

When your life is all about racing, not being allowed to attend an event is probably one of the worst experiences you can go through. That said, I do respect the verdict of the Stewards. This first corner situation obviously isn’t what anyone would want to happen and thankfully no-one was hurt in the incident which is the most important thing. I wish to apologise to the drivers who were involved and to their fans, as well as the team who have worked so hard this weekend as always.

It’s been a season of highs and lows for you so far; how do you bounce back from a day like this?

Nobody is more upset about this than I am. Of course, I don’t ever want a race to finish at the first corner; I want to be there at the chequered flag getting the results I know we are capable of. The car is quick and team is doing a great job; I can only say that today is part of a process that will make me a better driver.
