Jerez Test: Alonso back on top

Formula One’s Jerez Test continues this weekend on the circuit of Jerez de la Frontera.

Conditions are still great – dry and sunny.

Fernando Alonso has taken over the wheel from Massa in the Scuderia Ferrari and was quickly back at the top of the timesheets. At noon, the Spaniard had the fastest time and was leading from Kobayashi – whose Sauber team worked hard overnight to repair the C30 damaged yesterday by Perez – and Michael Schumacher.

The Williams team’s mechanics also worked frantically to repair the FW33 so that Rubens Barrichello could get on with his testing duties.

All eyes were obviously on Nick Heidfeld. The German driver is testing for Lotus Renault GP this weekend. Should he give satisfaction to the team, he will get the nod to replace the injured Robert Kubica at the wheel of the R31. He completed 26 laps this morning and was ninth fastest.

Testing will continue until 5pm
