Hamilton wins in Canada

Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian GP on Sunday afternoon, leading a second consecutive one-two for the McLaren Mercedes team.

Lewis Hamilton took a clean start as the lights went off, with Vettel and Alonso following him closely.

As expected, there were some drama further down the order. First it was Massa and Liuzzi who collided, sending the Force India into a spin and forcing Massa to pit at the end of lap one. In the meantime, De la Rosa and Petrov also had a coming together.

The first lap also saw Kamui Kobayashi retiring after hitting the barrier. It all settled down a little bit after those early incidents with Hamilton leading from Vettel and Alonso. Having started the race in 7th place following an unscheduled gearbox change and the subsequent five grid place penalty, Mark Webber made his way through the field and was up in P4 by lap 5.

Rosberg and Trulli were the first to pit for new tyres, as early as lap 6. Button and Sutil followed suit in the following lap. Race leader Hamilton pitted on lap 8, as well as third-placed Alonso. The Sapniard managed to rejoin the race in front of the McLaren driver.

Both Red Bulls inherited the lead and pitted on laps 14 and 15. Vettel interestingly opted to take the softer tyre on while his teammate chose to stick with the harder compound. Hamilton and Alonso got back at the front but pitted a second time between laps 27 and 28, allowing Webber to take the lead.

The Australian then set a good pace as he tried to pull away at the front. It worked well at the start but his tyres started to deteriorate and his lead quickly faded away. Hamilton overtook him on lap 50, the same lap he came in to fit the softer tyres. He rejoined in fifth.

With 20 laps still to go, the Briton was leading from Alonso, Button and Vettel. Button found more speed in this final part of the race and quickly closed in on Alonso. He moved up to P2 on lap 56 and then set on to close in on Hamilton.

The leader subsequently upped the pace and set a new fastest lap time of the race on lap 61. In the meantime, further down the field, Sebastien Buemi pulled a move on Michael Schumacher to take P8. Having fitted fresh tyres, Robert Kubica gave Renault something to cheer with a new fastest lap.

The McLaren team instructed Hamilton to look after his tyres on lap 63 but his 3.9 seconds lead was enough for him to hold his teammate Button at bay and take a second consecutive win. Fernando Alonso and Ferrari bounced back in style from a disastrous Turkish GP with a podium in Canada.

Sebastian Vettel took fourth for Red Bull. His teammate Webber finished fifth. Rosberg, Kubica, Buemi, Liuzzi and Sutil scored points. Michael Schumacher looked set for a points finish but lost it to Sutil as he tangled with Liuzzi on the final lap.
