Interview with Ma Qing Hua - It's

Ma Qing Hua made his first appearance as a Citroën factory driver for the 2014 FIA WTCC, this week at the Geneva Motor Show.

A former champion in China Touring Cars (2011 in the 1600 class) and Formula One test driver (2012 with HRT and 2013 with Caterham), Ma will compete in five WTCC race meetings during the upcoming season.

“I will make my maiden appearance at the Moscow Raceway and will join again in Spa, Shanghai and Macau. The fifth event has not been decided yet.”

How much testing are you having before the beginning of the season?

“In the past months I did a few testing with the team in Europe, on long and short circuits. So that they could evaluate my performance in different conditions. We will test again in a couple of weeks at Valencia. This is the official testing and will give us a clearer idea of where we are compared to the others.”

What is your opinion of WTCC?

“Touring car racing is tougher than single-seater, because drivers are involved in a lot of fighting. I have a lot to learn from this season. It’s gonna be a tough job, for sure! However, I think this is a perfect timing for me to join the championship, because it is the first year in the championship for the team as well. It’s a brand new world that we are trying to explore together.”

What were the reactions in China after the announcement that you will race for Citroën?

“Everyone in China is very happy, especially my fans and my family. WTCC is a world championship and is very popular in China. I’m confident that this will contribute to attract more people at the track for the Shanghai races.”

Realistically, what are your expectations for these first WTCC appearances?

“It’s my first year, so we are focusing on delivering a good job. The main target for me is to make an impression in China: at Shanghai that is my home town, and Macau. The previous European appearances will help me to practice, build up experience and get use to the car and the championship. But I’m very much looking forward to the Chinese races. It looks to be very exciting!”

You will be racing together two motorsport legends such as Sébastien Loeb and Yvan Muller. Do you think this will help you to learn quicker?

“It is great! They are both very experienced and talented drivers. And on top of this Muller is one of the most experienced in WTCC and touring car racing. I see it as a very good opportunity for me to learn from them and grow up as a professional racing driver.”
