Sunred run the new engine in Hungary
For Fredy Barth, Michel Nykjær and Pepe Oriola
SUNRED’s 1.6-litre petrol-powered turbo engine, developed in cooperation with Lehmann Motorentechnik, is finally facing its first race weekend.
After extensive track tests at Calafat and Alcarras, the Spanish outfit announced today that three of the new units will be run at the Hungaroring in the cars of Fredy Barth, Michel Nykjær and Pepe Oriola.
SUNRED’s three other drivers, Gabriele Tarquini, Tiago Monteiro and Aleksey Dudukalo will keep on racing with the 2.0-litre turbo diesel.
SUNRED homologated by Spain’s National Sporting Authority (RFEA) the SEAT León car with the 1.6 turbo engine and this was declared eligible for competing in WTCC by the FIA Touring Car Committee as a ‘national car’ (article 10C of the WTCC Sporting Regulations) with the name of SR León 1.6T.
For the Hungarian event, Barth’s, Nykjær’s and Oriola’s cars will be laden by 40 kg of compensation weight as per articles 79 B2 and B5 of the WTCC Sporting Regulations.
