Mikko takes a lesson from a champion

Just 8.24 kilometre now separate Mikko Hirvonen from his first victory of the year on Rally Italia Sardegna and his first real win for Citroen following his post-event exclusion in Portugal.

But in order to be a winner, you have to put yourself in the mindset of a winner, which is why the Citroen ace started the day with multiple cups of espresso: a ritual that has taken Sebastien Loeb to nine FIA World Rally Championship crowns.

The reason why is caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system by blocking adenosine, a neurotransmitter that normally causes a calming effect in the body. This causes the adrenal glands to release adrenaline: the "fight or flight" hormone. Heart rate increases, pupils dilate, muscles tighten up, and glucose is released into the blood stream for extra energy.

Caffeine also increases dopamine: the hormone that activates a feeling of pleasure in the brain.

Mikko, however, added an extra element into the mix by twinning his espresso with some pineapple. Pineapple contains bromelain: an enzyme that helps blood flow, increasing the sensation of alertness. The whole fruit is also rich in fibre and vitamin C, promoting a feeling of wellbeing. Not only that but there’s plenty of glucose, which releases energy, while bromelain also helps heal bruises quickly: useful on the rough roads of Sardinia.

No wonder Hirvonen’s a winner: he’s stuffed full of superfood. It’s official: espresso and pineapple is the breakfast of champions.
