Yvan Muller said the prospect of trying to win a record fifth FIA World Touring Car Championship in 2016 was enough to convince him to re-sign for the factory Citroën squad for next season.

Muller claimed his first WTCC crown in 2008 but his efforts to capture title number five in 2014 and again in 2015 were foiled by the impressive form of Citroën team-mate José María López, who has won both Drivers’ titles and 20 races during that period.

“If I would not have a fifth world title in my mind I would not re-sign the contract so of course I am motivated on that,” said Muller, who has finished runner-up for the last two seasons.

However, Muller, 46, is under no illusions that his sought-after fifth world crown will be a foregone conclusion.

“José is a fast driver, he’s full of confidence and since two years he’s the best driver of the championship so it will be tough,” said Muller, whose tally of 47 race wins is a WTCC record. “But I want to try to take the challenge until the end.”
