Huff cools WTCC title talk

Rob Huff has played down talk of winning the FIA World Touring Car Championship for a second time despite making it two wins from eight starts with victory from pole position in the Main Race in Morocco earlier this month.

Huff moved 40 points behind defending champion José María López with his victory in FIA WTCC AFRIQUIA Race of Morocco, having planted his factory Honda Civic on the DHL pole for the rain-hit counter. But the Briton has pointed to a loss of 25 potential points in Hungary behind his reluctance to dream of repeating his 2012 title feat when he became the first Englishman to clinch the coveted FIA world crown.

“It’s too early to think about [the championship],” said Huff. “The last few rounds we missed some points with the drive-through penalty in Hungary, which was potentially 25 points. But ultimately it’s a long season. We’re only at round four and we have a long way to go. All three [Honda drivers] are in good shape, Tiago especially and we’ll keep pushing. We won’t give up and we’re going to keep pushing and keep developing and hopefully we’re going to have a few more 1-2-3s during the year.”

Huff’s Honda team-mate Tiago Monteiro is second in the WTCC title fight, 14 points shy of López, while Norbert Michelisz is 13 down on Huff.
