Tom Chilton says two-time WTCC champion and current title leader José María López is so good that he’s compared him to motorsport legend Ayrton Senna.

Senna, who lost his life in a crash during the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994, is ranked as one of the sport’s greatest ever drivers.

After being outgunned by López during the Opening Race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife on Saturday, Chilton was quick to praise the Argentine, who bagged both wins at the famous German venue and clocked a new WTCC lap record in qualifying.

“I was driving very well, but López I can only describe as Ayrton Senna reincarnated,” said Briton Chilton, who bagged a Nürburgring Nordschleife overall podium and WTCC Trophy double. “He is Ayrton Senna of the touring cars. And as well as I was driving and [Yvan] Muller and everybody else on the circuit [was driving] I think López even finds a way to back off even on the limit to protect his car in case he needs to protect his tyres and pull away again. He’s a very special driver and it’s a pleasure to race with him and learn from him actually.”
